Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A mountain ("Mt (Bums-Rush) More") with the profile of a man (identifiable as Barry Goldwater) is surrounded by the destroyed sculptures of men (“Washington”, “Lincoln”, “Jefferson”, and “Roosevelt”), Ku Klux Klan members with a burning cross, marching Nazis saying “Sig Heil!” with a swastika, and people kneeling before the mountain. In the background is a forest (“John Birch Trees”). Caption: “Backward, Oh Backward, Turn Time in Its Flight--And Make Me a King Again--Just for Tonight!”. Artist signature lower right: "Chuck Thorndike”.
Historical NoteDuring the 1964 election cycle, Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater ran as a Republican against incumbent President Lyndon Johnson. Goldwater was pro-war and famously said "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice" and "Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue," which emboldened the conservative wing of the Republican Party.
