Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ and Hubert Humphrey walk across an elephant skin rug through the US Capitol rotunda. Three donkeys follow them. Two donkeys stand on the side and talk to each other. They pass by a band of donkeys playing music and behind them are a group of donkeys in suits. More donkeys are entering through the door. At the other end of the rug, there are three donkeys waiting to meet LBJ and Humphrey. Paintings and relief sculptures hang on the walls and statues stand on pedestals in between the paintings. A small piece of paper “The Hartford Times.” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Mr. Johnson Passes Through the Capitol Rotunda to His Inauguration”. Artist signature lower right: "Ed Valtman ‘65”.

Historical NoteLyndon B. Johnson was inaugurated as president on January 21, 1965. His address was mostly focused on domestic issues, as opposed to John F. Kennedy who emphasized foreign policy.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
