Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ drives a campaign bandwagon (“LBJ”) and says, "Stop I'm getting off!". A man (“Gov. Hughes”) in the foreground says, "Where do I jump now?" two more wagons (“McCarthy”, “RFK”) approach. Artist signature lower left: "Jack Bender Waterloo (Iowa) Daily Courier”.
Historical NoteOn March 31, 1968, Lyndon Johnson announced that he was withdrawing from the presidential race so he could focus on ending the Vietnam War. At the time, he had just lost the New Hampshire primary to antiwar candidate Eugene McCarthy, Robert F. Kennedy, another antiwar candidate, had just entered the race, and his polls in Wisconsin right before the primary were low. He also announced a partial bombing halt in Vietnam. New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy, a prominent critic of the Vietnam War, ran for president in 1968 as a Democrat with an anti-war platform until his assassination in June 1968. Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate. New Jersey governor Richard Hughes was considered as a potential vice president by Hubert Humphrey.
