Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ speaks forcefully at a microphone, elevated on top of a cloudburst ("LBJ's Campaign Speeches"). Two other cloudbursts with papers flying off the top can be seen. Capitol dome in background. Caption: “Escalation on the Home Front Too”. Additional text at lower center: “1968, Chicago Sun-Times”. Historical NoteLyndon Johnson was very involved with the media, but unlike Dwight Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy, he had less televised news conferences and more informal interviews. President Johnson paid close attention to the media as well and kept three televisions in the Oval Office. Before Johnson withdrew from the presidential campaign in late March 1968, he was actively campaigning to stay in office.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
