Historical NotePresident Johnson had to control a divided Democratic Party. Because of the Vietnam War, the Democratic Party became divided toward the end of President Johnson’s term. Many Democrats blamed Johnson for the war and criticized him for it while others supported Johnson’s policies. At the same time, because of civil rights legislation, many conservative white southerners that otherwise agreed on Democrat domestic policy left the Democratic Party.Additional Details
