Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon race toward a finish wire. LBJ tries to trip Nixon with a broom handle. Humphrey grabs Nixon's hair and punches him in the ribs. Nixon swings his arm to clip Humphrey in the throat. Caption: “Down to the Wire”. Artist signature lower right: "Gib Crockett © The Washington Star”.

Historical NoteDuring the 1968 presidential election, former Vice President Richard Nixon ran as a Republican against Vice President Hubert Humphrey.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
