Historical NoteAfter the spring of 1963, when President John F. Kennedy proposed civil rights legislation and the signing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964, many conservative white southerners that otherwise agreed on Democrat domestic policy left the Democratic Party. Some supported Alabama governor George Wallace’s 1968 presidential campaign as an Independent Party candidate with a pro-segregation platform.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
