Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ stands in front of empty seats in an auditorium below a banner "Democratic Nominating Convention All the Way with the Incumbent President." Signs with "Gene McCarthy for President" and "RFK for President" can be seen. Caption reads: " -- I move that the nominations be ceased -- ". Artist signature lower right: "Graham".

Historical NoteLyndon Johnson stepped down from the presidential race right before the April 2, 1968 Wisconsin primary, which he was projected to lose, to focus on negotiating peace in Vietnam. New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy ran for president in 1968 as a Democrat with an anti-war platform until his assassination in June 1968. Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate. The convention described in this cartoon is the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August 1968.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
