Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ carries a sign ("Repent") while he walks on a graph line ("Polls") that has descended. Artist signature lower left: "Graham”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across the top: “Vice-President Humphrey Says President 'Has Sort of Hit Sawdust Trail' in a Re-Election Campaign.-News Item”. Handwritten at lower left: [circle] [blue] “Sun. 12-17-67”. Handwritten at lower center: [blue] “34 cm”. Handwritten at lower right: [blue] “R - 8 ¼”.
Historical NotePresident Johnson’s approval ratings were very high at the start of his presidency and remained fairly high throughout 1964 and 1965 while much of the Great Society legislation was getting passed. By 1966, as the Vietnam War escalated, his approval and disapproval ratings were around the same. Throughout 1967, when this cartoon was made, his approval ratings continued to decline.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
