Physical DescriptionOriginal color cartoon drawing. LBJ is surprised to see a maple tree ("New Hampshire Primary") with a bucket ("Sen. McCarthy") hanging from it. A man (identifiable as Bobby Kennedy) runs off with a large bucket ("Nomination Hopes RFK"). Caption: “Gangway--Bigger Bucket!”. Artist signature lower right: "Hodgins Sr. Orlando Star”.
Historical NoteMinnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate. In the March 12 New Hampshire primary, McCarthy won a large amount of the vote that gave Johnson a small lead, demonstrating the popularity of his antiwar platform. New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy entered the race on March 16 as a Democrat with an anti-war platform until his assassination in June 1968.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
