Historical NoteBecause of the Vietnam War, the Democratic Party became divided toward the end of President Johnson’s term. Many Democrats blamed Johnson for the war and criticized him for it. New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy opposed Johnson’s involvement in Vietnam. Johnson also faced criticism from Republicans like Florida House Representative Richard Kelley and Florida Senator Edward J. Gurney Jr. Gurney voted against civil rights legislation, foreign aid, and Great Society programs. Sherman Adams was the White House chief of staff under President Eisenhower and a liberal Republican.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
