Historical NoteIn this cartoon depicting the 1968 election "race", not only were there a Democratic donkey and a Republican elephant running, but also a crow is in the line up, a reference to Jim Crow laws. Alabama governor George Wallace left the Democrat Party to run for president in 1968 as an American Independent Party candidate with a pro-segregation platform. A dove is also running; both Republican Governor George Romney of Michigan and Democrat Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota criticized the Vietnam War and campaigned for ending it.Additional Details
