Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man (“John Bailey”) sits at a desk ("Democratic Natl. Comm.”) twirling his revolver and talking on the phone. LBJ's picture is on the wall. The shape of Texas with a heart in the middle of it (“Deep in the [Heart] of [Texas]”) and a Texas flag decorate the wall. On the desk is a rose in a vase (“Yellow Rose of - [Texas]”). Caption: “McCarthy? McCarthy? Never Heard of Him!”. Artist signature lower right: "Reg Manning”.

Historical NoteMinnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate. In the March 12 New Hampshire primary, McCarthy won a large amount of the vote that gave Johnson a small lead, demonstrating the popularity of his antiwar platform.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
