Historical NoteRichard Hughes was the governor of New Jersey and a democrat. Lyndon Johnson considered having him be his vice president in the 1964 election, before choosing Hubert Humphrey instead. Lyndon Johnson’s ability to persuade and push people into doing what he wanted was referred to as the Johnson Treatment.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
