Historical NotePresident Johnson was up for his second term during the 1968 election, but he would later withdraw from the race on March 31, 1968. Johnson had the backing of the AFL-CIO labor organization. Minnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate. While McCarthy did well during the March 12 New Hampshire primary, Johnson still had a small lead. However, the projected outcome of the April 2 Wisconsin primary favored McCarthy. New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy entered the race with an antiwar platform on March 16 until his assassination in June 1968.
