Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Giant LBJ sits on the floor with a big bump on his head caused by a little man ("McCarthy's Successful N.H. Showing") with a slingshot. A giant fresh-appearing man (“Kennedy”) holds his fists out in front of a bleary LBJ. Caption: “OK, Lyndon, Put Up Your Dukes Now!”. Artist signature lower right: "McKevin McVey Record Call (N.J.-N.Y.)”.
Historical NoteMinnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate. In the March 12 New Hampshire primary, McCarthy won a large amount of the vote that gave Johnson a small lead, demonstrating the popularity of his antiwar platform. New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy announced his presidential campaign on March 16 to run as a Democrat with an anti-war platform until his assassination in June 1968.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
