Historical NoteBecause of the Vietnam War, the Democratic Party became divided toward the end of President Johnson’s term. Many Democrats blamed Johnson for the war and criticized him for it. During the 1968 elections, many voters supported antiwar candidates such as Robert F. Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy. At the same time, because of civil rights legislation, many conservative white southerners that otherwise agreed on Democrat domestic policy left the Democratic Party. Many of these Southern Democrats supported Alabama governor George Wallace in the 1968 election because of his segregationist platform.
