Historical NoteDuring Harry S Truman’s 1948 presidential campaign, a supporter yelled “Give em hell Harry” and Truman responded by saying, “I don’t give them hell. I just tell the truth about them, and they think it’s hell.” In this cartoon, Lyndon Johnson wants to borrow Truman’s train he used for campaigning, since Johnson was up for reelection in 1968, the year after this cartoon was made.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
