Historical NoteVice President Hubert Humphrey ran for president in 1968 after Lyndon Johnson withdrew from the race after being defeated in the New Hampshire primary by antiwar Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota and seeing low support in Wisconsin polls as the Wisconsin primary was coming up. Also, after McCarthy’s success in New Hampshire, fellow antiwar Senator Robert F. Kennedy of New York entered the race. Also, in March 1968, there was a crisis relating to the conversion of dollars to gold, which impacted the funding of the Vietnam War and Great Society.
