Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ appears startled as three men (identifiable as George Wallace, Richard Nixon, and Hubert Humphrey) in astronaut suits carrying their helmets enter the White House. Caption: “Nice Ya'll Could Accept My Invitation to the White House, Capt. Schirra--Capt. Schirra!??”. Artist signature lower right: "Stayskal © 1968 Chicago’s American”.
Historical NoteThe election of 1968 was a three-way race. Vice President Hubert Humphrey ran for president in 1968 after Lyndon Johnson withdrew from the race. Former Vice President Richard Nixon secured the Republican nomination during the 1968 election. His platform emphasized crime and he criticized Johnson’s Vietnam policy, but was vague about his own plans to end the war. Alabama governor George Wallace left the Democrat Party to run for president in 1968 as an American Independent Party candidate with a pro-segregation platform. Wally Schirra was an astronaut who completed the first space rendezvous on Gemini 6A.
