Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. In a boxing ring ("New Hampshire"), a man (identifiable as Eugene McCarthy) beats up on a scarecrow that looks like LBJ. In the audience, a man (identifiable as Bobby Kennedy) grins. Caption: “It's Just a Stand-In, Th' President Was Too Busy Fighting the Vietcong to Get Here!”. Artist signature lower right: "Werner”.

Historical NoteMinnesota Senator Eugene McCarthy ran for president in 1968 during the Democratic primaries as an antiwar candidate. In the March 12 New Hampshire primary, McCarthy won a large amount of the vote that gave Johnson a small lead, demonstrating the popularity of his antiwar platform.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
