Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ strides through a gate followed by a man (“The South”) in a white suit. A man (identifiable as Barry Goldwater) peers around the gate post at them. Caption: “Solid for Whom?”. Artist signature lower right: "Herc Ficklen Dallas News”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: “With best wishes to President Lyndon B. Johnson Sincerely”.
Historical NoteThe “Solid South” was a bloc of white segregationist voters in the South that Democrats aligned themselves with until the Kennedy administration and the passing of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. Many switched parties and supported Barry Goldwater in the 1964 election.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
