Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A hand ("Congress") reaches in from out of frame to show a key ("Presidential Succession Amendment") under the door mat to White House. Caption reads: "Spare Key". Artist signature lower center: "Karl Hubenthal L.A. Herald Examiner".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at bottom center: "For President Johnson - with warmest regards!".
Historical NoteThe 25th Amendment, which was ratified February 1967, outlined what would happen if a president died, resigned, or was removed from office. It allowed the vice-president to assume all presidential responsibilities and powers, including filling the vice-president vacancy.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
