Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ, looking worried, is dressed as a circus ringmaster as he rides with one foot on each of two donkeys ("North" and "South") running in opposite directions. Behind LBJ is a large banner reading "Greatest Show on Earth". Caption reads: "Fancy Riding Under the Big Dome....." Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star."
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "It takes a Texan to pull this one, Lyndon!"
Historical NoteAfter the spring of 1963, when President John F. Kennedy proposed civil rights legislation, many conservative white southerners that otherwise agreed on Democrat domestic policy left the Democratic Party. In this cartoon, Senator Lyndon Johnson tries to keep control over both the north and south while the party is splitting over the issue of civil rights.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
