Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. An elephant in hospital bed talks to another patient. The elephant has two hatchets ("N.Y.", "Calif.") in his head. Patient in the next bed has a horrified expression. Caption reads: "Lately, I've Had These Splitting Headaches". Artist signature lower left: "Poinier". Additional text at lower right: "Detroit News '65".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across bottom: "5 5/8 x 6 3/4" "35.6 picas" "3 col cartoon Edit page" "Tuesday Nov 2 1965" "Cut off title after proofing place in envelope top drawer".
Historical NoteIn April 1965, incumbent mayor Democrat Sam Yorty won against Republican James Roosevelt. Later that year, Republican John Lindsay won the New York mayoral election against Conservative William F. Buckley and Democrat Abraham Beame.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
