Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal three-frame cartoon drawing. Frame 1: A senator (identifiable as Thruston Morton) carries a picket sign ("Military Brainwashed LBJ Sen. Morton"). Frame 2: Morton measures LBJ's head. Frame 3: Morton bends down to speak to a tiny man (“Romney”). Caption: “Something Went Wrong, George--It Didn't Shrink Him an Inch”. Artist signature lower right: "Stayskal”. A small piece of paper “© 1967, Chicago’s American” adhered to lower right.
Historical NoteKentucky Senator Thruston Ballard Morton was a Republican who opposed the Vietnam War. Michigan governor George Romney ran against Richard Nixon in the 1968 Republican primaries. In August 1967, he described being “brainwashed” into supporting the Vietnam War, a controversial comment at the time. He shifted to an antiwar platform, and withdrew on February 28, 1968.
