Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A baseball game is in progress with all players and umpires looking like LBJ. Another man (“Ford”), standing on the sideline with an elephant ("GOP"), speaks to LBJ. Caption: “When Do We Get to Bat?”. Artist signature lower right: "Werner”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To President Lyndon B. Johnson. With best wishes, C.G. Werner, Indianapolis Star”. Handwritten at lower right: [red] “51”. Handwritten at upper right: [strikethrough] [underline] “Thurs”. Handwritten at upper right: “Sat”.
Historical NoteIn this cartoon, Lyndon Johnson plays every role in a baseball game, demonstrating the command he held over his political party (so that they are all clones of Johnson). By contrast, Republicans had trouble getting their platform across amid the Democratic majority in the House and the Senate.
