Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Six men (“Stevenson”, “Kefauver”, “Harriman”, LBJ, “Lausche”, “Symington”) ride a donkey. A seventh man ("Williams") holds the tail and runs behind. Caption: “Handicapped”. Artist signature lower right: "Yoes”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To Senator Lyndon B. Johnson. Best regards, Ralph Yoes".
Historical NoteThe 1956 Democratic National Convention took place in Chicago and resulted in the nomination of Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver as president and vice-president. Senator Lyndon Johnson ran for president in 1956, but lost the nomination. In this cartoon, a lot of politicians with different platforms hope to ride on the same Democratic donkey, weighing it down.
