Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man ("The Draft") stands in front of a group of four men (“Congressional Committees”) who hold papers ("Changes Planned by the President” “Presidential Commission Recommendation"). Another man says, "You're never gonna make HIM lovable!". A small piece of paper “McNaught Syndicate, Inc.” adhered to lower right. Caption: “Let's Face It–”. Artist signature lower center: "Reg Manning”.Historical NoteAbout one-third of American soldiers that fought in Vietnam were drafted. Many men avoided the draft through college deferments and family connections, so it disproportionately affected men from poorer backgrounds. The draft lottery would eventually replace it in 1969.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
