Historical NoteIn July 1966, airline workers from the International Association of Machinists went on strike due to a lack of pay raises. Five different airlines were impacted and the strike shut down sixty percent of the commercial airline industry. President Johnson intervened and offered a settlement of a 4.5% raise that was rejected. Eventually, the strike ended with a 6% raise every three years. The February 1966 Manpower Report of the President described the increases in jobs, employment, and wages in the United States, as well as identified places where more manpower was needed.Additional Details
