Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ stands behind a fence with his finger on the trigger of shotgun pointed in the air. A cow ("40-hour Week") is inside the fence. A man "(Reuther") runs in from the background shouting "Spare that noble creature!" Caption reads: "That Animal Ain't Producin'". Artist signature lower right: "Bill McClanahan-".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at bottom right: "To the Senator with best wishes - Bill McClanahan".
Historical NoteWalter Reuther was the president of the United Automobile Workers (UAW) union. He also became president of the Congress of Industrial Organizations and discussed its merger with the American Federation of Labor, headed by George Meany. In this cartoon, Lyndon Johnson considers killing the 40-hour work week, but Reuther prevents him from it.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
