Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Cowboy LBJ is in between a herd of unruly steers ("Congress") and a man ("Meany") with herd of sheep. LBJ says, "George, we're gonna have trouble at the pass ("14-B Repeal"), again!". Caption reads: "The Drovers". Artist signature lower right: "© 1966 by The Chicago Tribune Parrish".
Historical NoteIn 1965, President Johnson tried to end right-to-work laws in nineteen states, which would have resulted in the repeal of 14(b) of the Taft-Hartley Act. Right-to-work laws allow workers to choose not to join unions. George Meany was the president of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and merged it with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in 1955 and continued to be president of the combined AFL-CIO. As president of the AFL-CIO, he supported the Civil Rights Movement, domestic programs like Medicare, and the United Farm Workers union.
