Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Five boys ("Steel”, “Autos”, “Sulfur”, “Chemicals", “Other industries”) climb up a tree ("Price Hikes"). LBJ stands next to a note (“LBJ’s multitude of problems”) and says "Now, boys--aren't you climbing terribly high?--". A man in the lower right corner says, "Boys will be boys…what about the things that make them climb?" Caption: “If It's Not One Thing, It's Another”. Additional text at lower right: “New Orleans Times-Picayune Sept. 7, 1967”. Artist signature lower right: "Pletcher”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "To President Johnson with sincere good wishes Eldon Pletcher”.
Historical NoteWhen Lyndon B. Johnson signed the 1964 Revenue Act that decreased income taxes and refused to raise taxes, spending by consumers and businesses increased. Along with government spending, all of this increase of demand led to inflation. John Q Public is a character often included in political cartoons to depict the average citizen, often portrayed with glasses, a mustache, and a fedora.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
