Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Uncle Sam is the target in a sword-throwing act. A large dagger ("Steel Strike Threat") hits near him. Far above him, a pen pierces a paper ("Steel Settlement signed by union and industry"). Caption: “The Pen Is Mightier Than the Sword”. Additional text at lower left: “9-7-65”. Artist signature lower right: "Fred O. Seibel”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower center: "To President Lyndon B. Johnson with my best wishes -Fred O. Seibel".
Historical NoteIn September 1965, Lyndon Johnson averted a steel strike by pressuring the United Steelworkers union under I. W. Abel and management under U.S. Steel Vice-President R. Conrad Cooper to come to an agreement of raising wages to $4.40 per hour with benefits.
