Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ looks at a metal egg ("Labor Legislation") on his dinner table (“The White House Table”). An industrial worker ("Labor Votes") looks over his shoulder. The bird ("Congress") has the face of a man and sits on the egg. A smaller egg ("Voluntary Arbitration") is also on the table and is not being sat on. Caption: “The Hard Boiled Egg”. Artist signature lower right: "Shevchik”.

Historical NoteVoluntary arbitration means that a dispute is willingly submitted for determination. It is opposed to mandatory arbitration, which requires a dispute be determined. Lyndon Johnson had support from labor unions and enacted legislation with them in mind.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
