Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Railroad brakeman LBJ pulls on the brake ("Congressional Intervention") beside tracks as the train ("Railroad Strike") approaches. On the floor nearby is a note ("Seriously Impair the Vietnam War Effort"). Caption: “Trying to Sidetrack It”. Artist signature lower right: "Shevchik”.

Historical NoteIn April 1964, President Johnson ended a 5-year dispute over railroad industry, giving a raise to about half of the workers in the union as well as other benefits and averting a strike.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
