Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits in a lounge chair, wearing a lei ("Substituting for JFK") and strumming ukelele while a girl dances the hula in the background. He has a tropical drink sitting on table near a "Governors' Conference" placard. Caption reads: "The Things a Loyal V. P. Has to Put up With!". Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star."
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten across top: "3 cols - Tues. June - 27/61".
Historical NoteVice-President Lyndon Johnson went to Hawaii for a conference in May 1961 as the first stop in a trip that would later go to the Philippines, China, Thailand, India and Pakistan. He gave speeches at Hickam Air Force Base, the ground-breaking ceremony of the East-West Center, and Iolani Palace.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
