Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Frame 1: A man with an olive branch tells LBJ, "Don't let this great opportunity slip by!". A man (identifiable as Ho Chi Minh) behind a barrier holds a sign ("If bombing stops we promise"). Frame 2: Ho stands up to reveal the end of the sign (“If bombing stops we promise absolutely nothing!"). The man with the olive branch turns around in shock. Caption: “At Last! A Guarantee!”. Artist signature lower right: "Reg Manning”. A small piece of paper “McNaught Syndicate, Inc.” adhered to lower center.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower center: "Regards to President Lyndon B. Johsnon. Reg Manning 4-4-68". Handwritten at lower left: [blue] “3 col” “Mailing”. Stamped at lower left: “Jan 18 1967”.
Historical NoteNorth Vietnam did not want to recognize the government of South Vietnam and had the goal of reunification, while South Vietnam did not recognize the National Liberation Front. Meanwhile, the United States followed Containment policy, hoping to keep Communism from diffusing to other Southeast Asian nations, and aimed to leave Vietnam without the humiliation of defeat.
