Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ sits at one end of long table ("Peace Table") with stack of papers ("US Peace Offers"). The other chairs, including the "N. Vietnam" chair, are empty. Caption reads: "Loneliest Place in the World". Artist signature lower right: "Reg Manning [cactus drawing]". Additional text at lower left: "McNaught Syndicate, Inc.".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at center left: "Regards to President Johnson Reg Manning [cactus drawing] 7-28-66". Handwritten at lower left: "3 col". Stamped and hand-written at bottom center: "Jul 11 1966 Mailing".
Historical NoteNorth Vietnam did not want to recognize the government of South Vietnam and had the goal of reunification, while South Vietnam did not recognize the National Liberation Front. Meanwhile, the United States followed Containment policy, hoping to keep Communism from diffusing to other Southeast Asian nations, and aimed to leave Vietnam without the humiliation of defeat.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
