Historical NoteDuring Lyndon Johnson’s presidency, Richard Nixon initially supported the Vietnam War because he did not want it to appear as if the United States would step down to avoid war. In the 1964 election, Richard Nixon did not run for president.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
