Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Two flying kites ("LBJ White Paper", "Ford White Paper") snarled strings ("Vietnam"). The LBJ kite is flying high, while the Ford kite is flailing. Caption reads: "Oops! Looks Like You Got a Snarl in the Party Line, Gerald!". Artist signature lower left: "Engelhardt St. Louis Post-Dispatch August 25, 1965".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To President Johnson, who's still flying high, with all good wishes, from Tom Engelhardt".
Historical Note
The White Paper on Vietnam was a paper written by the Senate Republican Policy Committee criticizing Lyndon Johnson’s involvement in Vietnam by pointing to the loss of life, financial costs, and the war’s unpopularity among both the international community and the people of Vietnam. The paper urged against bi-partisanship in war policy and challenged other Republicans to explain the national interest in Vietnam and how far the United States would go to achieve it. In January 1965, House Minority Leader Gerald Ford criticized the bombing of North Vietnamese supply lines in Laos and the lack of transparency in the Johnson administration about its Vietnam policy.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
