Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man (“Barry”) pulls a wagonload of lighter fluid. On a higher rock, LBJ pours a liquid ("Dr. Goldwater's Magic Haiphong Lighter Fluid") out of a box over a fire underneath a chicken ("North Viet") with the head of a man (identifiable as Ho Chi Minh) on a spit. The fire explodes. In the distance, a helicopter (“LBJ”) sits on top of a large rock. Caption: “I Knew He Would Have to Buy Some to Cook That Tough Old Bird!”. Artist signature lower right: "McK McVey Record Call (N.J.-N.Y.)”.
Historical NoteBarry Goldwater supported further American involvement in Vietnam, including the use of nuclear weapons. Goldwater and other pro-war “hawks” supported escalating the war to stop the spread of Communism in Southeast Asia. Pro-war figures believed that the war could be won if the United States had enough public support.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
