Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Four men (identifiable as Bobby Kennedy, Albert Gore Sr., Wayne Morse, and J. William Fulbright) (“doves”) each carry a little dove and stand before LBJ (“US President”). LBJ points to a paper ("America's Word As Good as Its Bond US Treaty Promise to Help Our Friends Repel Aggressors"). A small piece of paper “McNaught Syndicate, Inc.” adhered to lower center. Caption: “You Want Me to Devalue This?”. Artist signature lower right: "Reg Manning”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: "To President Lyndon B. Johnson Reg manning 4-4-68". Handwritten at lower left: [blue] “3 col.”. Stamped at lower center: “Jaan 25 1968”. Handwritten at lower center: [blue] “Mailing”.
Historical NoteAnti-war “doves” included both people who opposed the war ideologically, considering it to be unjust, and people who just believed the war was unwinnable. The number of doves increased over the course of the war. New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Oregon Senator Wayne Morse, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman J. William Fulbright and Tennessee Senator Al Gore Sr. all opposed the Vietnam War.
