Historical NoteThe Space Race was the competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to further space exploration and technology out of fear of space being used for nuclear power. In August 1964, the USS Maddox and other US ships were seemingly attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, leading to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that allowed President Johnson to take military action.Additional Details
