Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man (“Ambassador Taylor”) holds the tail of a tiger ("Vietnam Situation") that hangs onto a tree branch slipping from a high cliff. LBJ flies by in a helicopter and calls to him. Caption: “Just Hang on Until After the Election!”. Artist signature lower right: "B. Green”.

Historical NoteIn August 1964, US ships were seemingly attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, leading to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that allowed President Johnson to take military action. Maxwell D. Taylor was an ambassador to South Vietnam that escalated the Vietnam War. During his 1964 election campaign, Johnson promised that he would not escalate the Vietnam War.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
