Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ has his hand on a box with a gift tag ("To Tran Van Huong -- Saigon") as he talks to the store clerk. He has a newspaper under his arm ("Huong Must Go Buddhists Warn LBJ"). Behind LBJ are crowds, a Christmas tree, and a wreath. Caption: “Let Me Have the Sales Slip--I May Have to Return It!”. Artist signature lower right: "L. D. Warren”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower center: [blue] “33 ½ picas” “Mon 21 Dec 64”.
Historical NoteIn August 1964, US ships were seemingly attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, leading to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that allowed President Johnson to take military action. Tran Van Huong was Prime Minister of South Vietnam from November 1964 to January 1965 and was unpopular with the Buddhist majority.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
