Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ is in the hospital looking out the window at peace demonstrators marching near a sign ("Hospital Zone -- Quiet!"). LBJ reads a paper (“Admin.”). The demonstrators hold signs ("We protest killing people", “End the war”, “Down with the draft”, “Ceasefire”, and "Stop fighting in Vietnam"). Caption: “Youths’ Companion”. Historical NoteOn October 8, 1965, President Johnson underwent gallbladder surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital. The Antiwar Movement (1964-1973) emerged in response to the Vietnam War and included many activist groups such as the Students for a Democratic Society and the Yippies and used tactics such as mass demonstrations, sit-ins, teach-ins, and guerilla theater.
