Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ looks wearily at an unfolded document ("Vietnam") as he runs between two firing cannons ("You're not going far enough!" "You're going too far!". Caption reads: "Cannon to the Right of Him -Cannon to the Left of Him!" Artist signature lower right: "Justus Minneapolis Star".
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "For President Lyndon Johnson - with best wishes Roy Justus 11-9-65". Handwritten across bottom: "Cannon to the Right of Him - Cannon to the Left of Him!" "32 1/2 picas".
Historical NotePro-war “hawks” supported escalating the war to stop the spread of Communism in Southeast Asia. Pro-war figures believed that the war could be won if the United States had enough public support. Anti-war “doves” included both people who opposed the war ideologically, considering it to be unjust, and people who just believed the war was unwinnable.
