Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ and Humphrey are soldiers in a helicopter (“to Gulf of Tonkin”) hovering over two rafts ("Civil Rights”, "US Poverty") calling for help. The helicopter keeps going as LBJ and Humphrey gesture with empty hands. Caption: “Another Emergency”.
Historical NoteIn August 1964, US ships were attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, leading to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that allowed President Johnson to take military action. The most ambitious and controversial part of the Great Society was its initiative to end poverty. The Kennedy Administration had been contemplating a federal effort against poverty. Johnson, who, as a teacher, had observed extreme poverty in Texas among Mexican-Americans, launched an "unconditional war on poverty" in the first months of his presidency with the goal of eliminating hunger, illiteracy, and unemployment from American life. The Civil Rights Movement began in the 1950s with Brown v. Board of Education, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and the publicized desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. organized the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Bloody Sunday and the march from Selma to Montgomery for voting rights took place in March 1965, during Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidential term.Additional Details
