Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ drives a jeep to a fork in the road and is directed to the right ("To End War") by a man (identifiable as W.C. Westmoreland), who says “This is the only way left open.”. The road to left ("Road to Peace via Negotiations") is full of bomb craters and leads to a broken bridge over a stream. Caption: “The Road Ho Chi Minh Bombed Out”. Additional text at lower right: "Military Pressure on Hanoi". Artist signature lower right: "Reg Manning”. A small piece of paper “McNaught Syndicate, Inc.” adhered to lower left.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at center right: "Regards to President Lyndon B. Johnson Reg Manning 5-17-67".
Historical NoteNorth Vietnam did not want to recognize the government of South Vietnam and had the goal of reunification, while South Vietnam did not recognize the National Liberation Front. Meanwhile, the United States followed Containment policy, hoping to keep Communism from diffusing to other Southeast Asian nations, and aimed to leave Vietnam without the humiliation of defeat.
